Jacqueline Rush Lee

Jacqueline Rush Lee is an Anglo-Irish sculptor who lives and works in Hawaii (USA). Jacqueline has been working with books for fifteen years and is recognized for working with the book form. Her artworks are featured in blogs, magazines, books and international press.

Jacqueline’s work focuses on the book as object, medium and archetypal form. Working to reveal or transform the nature of a book, Lee is interested in the aesthetic of books as cultural objects that come with their own histories of use and meaning. By using books as her canvas or building block, Jacqueline subtly transforms their formal and conceptual arrangement through a variety of practices in which the physicality and thus the context of the books have been altered.

  1. I absolutely love the way she alter the books into various forms. They are visually interesting and constantly reminds me of the shapes of flowers. Somehow the addition of colors painted onto some of the books added new meaning to them- like the pop-up-picture children book that was supposedly filled with vivid colors overwhelmed with black that changes the original happy colors into a somber, dark mood.

  2. I have been working with paper since last semester and it is my focus of concentration. Her works are quite interesting and it reveals a lot of never before seen art forms of how paper can turn into. I especially love how she doesn't just work with plain paper, but prints as well. Her use of repetition is also extraordinary as she layered paper to form organic objects and shapes.

  3. I remember that you did this artist for the speech/debate presentation. I agree with Blanca that the pieces remind me of flowers. Since a book's basic shape is a flat box, I think it's very creative of her to work with the pages and patterns instead. A lot of the "book art" that I've seen are basically just a carving done on a stack of books, so her artwork is refreshing to see.
